Lyrics and English Translation (Meteor Garden)

(Can't Help Falling in Love With You) is the theme song for the 2001 Taiwanese romance serial drama Meteor Garden The song is composed by Malaysian composer and gospel singer 湯小康 (Tang Xiao Kang), and sung by Taiwanese singer-songwriter Harlem Yu.

The drama is based on Japanese shōjo manga series, Boys Over Flowers (Hana Yori Dango), written by Yoko Kamio. The drama features Barbie Shu, Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu; the latter four collectively known as Taiwanese boy band F4 (Flower 4). The drama series became very popular not only in Taiwan, but also in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and even in the Philippines; and other Asian countries.

The story is about a young girl Shancai (Barbie Shu) from a humble background who managed to get into a university which was dominated by the F4 group, known to be a bullying and arrogant group of spoilt kids from rich families. Eventually, the girl’s strong personality which saw her standing up to the bullying group, eventually earned her the respect of the leader Dao Ming Si (Jerry Yan) of the F4 group; who ended up falling in love with her.

Another popular song from the series is the end theme song "The Love You Want" (你要的愛), composed and sung by Malaysian singer Penny Tai (戴佩妮).  It is notable that the two popular Mandarin songs from one of Taiwan’s most popular drama series are both composed by Malaysian Chinese. While Harlem Yu is famous for the song “情非得已”, the composer Tang Xiao Kang probably did not get the fame he sought for after struggling in Taiwan to compose a hit song, at one time even having no money to pay his room rent for several months. Let’s face it, the drama owes its popularity to the theme song; other than that, the story is not exciting and the acting rather stiff.

 Lyrics:
(Can't Help Falling in Love With You)
Singer: 庾澄慶 (Harlem Yu)
Lyricist:
Composer:湯小康 (Tang Xiao Kang)

I cannot forget the first time I set my eyes on you,I see the eyes of a beautiful girl
In my mind, images of you will never disappear
Holding both your hands, I feel your tenderness,it really takes my breath away
Your innocence, I will always cherish. Seeing you suffer makes me feel sad
Wo...o...oh

I am afraid I will fall in love with you; I am afraid to let myself get too close to you
I am afraid I have nothing to give you; So loving you needs a lot of courage

I am afraid I will fall in love with you; Maybe one day I cannot control myself anymore
Just keep thinking of you only makes me suffer; I really can't help falling in love with you

Song repeats….

Why do I unexpectedly meet you again?
Although I am not ready, I can't help falling into love's entrapment

Hokkien Lyrics and Translation

About the most popular Taiwanese Hokkien song of the later years, this is also Yeh Qi Tian's trademark song which he sang in 1988. It is considered an evergreen song and is popular up till today in East Asia and China. The theme of the song is about working hard to get what you want – something that is relevant to everyone, everywhere and anytime. The song is even sung at political rallies in Taiwan, and even in Singapore, as the theme of the song is about winning.

The lyrics encourages a person not to feel defeated and dejected despite setbacks and the ups and downs of life, While one's fate may not be so good, the unfavourable influence of fate in our destinies can be overcome by sheer will and hard work. The song became popular at a time of economic progress in Taiwan, urging people to work hard.

This song is a way also reflects the singer’s struggles to be a singer. Yeh Qi Tian, in his early teens, left his rural hometown for Taipei, with a dream to become a singer. Alone and with hardly any money, he was for a time selling fish and vegetables to survive, while seeking opportunities to become a singer. After about two months, making no headway, feeling dejected and he went back to his home town, but later went back to Taipei again. Eventually, he found a music teacher and mentor, Guo Dacheng (郭大誠) who later taught him to sing well and who later helped him to make his first song recording. Thanks to his teacher and mentor, Yeh Qi Tian eventually became one of Taiwan’s most famous singers, loved for his Hokkien songs. If the singer had accept his fate and stayed back in his village rather than venture out to fulfil his aspiration to become a singer, he would not have fulfilled his dream.

Hokkien lyrics:

Ai Pia Jia Eh Yia (爱拼才会赢)

Chid see sid cjid em bian wan tan

Chid see lor phek em bian tan han

Na thang seek kee hee bung

Mui deed chwee bung bung

Bo hoon wu thae cjin nchui teo chao larng

Dim seng ho pid see hie siong eh po lore

Wu see kee wu see low

Ho woon  pai woon

Nsah hoon ntee chu ntia

Chid hoon kor pha mpia

Ai mpia chia eh yia

English Translation:

Strive Hard and You’ll Win

At times when you are feeling depressed, do not despair

At times when you are feeling hopeless, do not be afraid

Going through times without hope, we may drown our sorrow in liquor

A person without a soul is like a scarecrow

Life is like the ocean’s wave

Sometimes up, sometimes down

Good luck or bad luck

Still we have to carry on working all the way

Thirty percent of life is Heaven’s will

Seventy percent of life is hard work

Strive hard and we will win

Lyrics:

Born in Taiwan in 1951, Tracy Huang (黄露仪- Huang Lu Yu), also known as Huáng Yīng Yīng (黄莺莺) to Taiwanese, is well known for singing both Mandarin and English songs. She started singing with pop bands in Taiwan at a young age, which included singing at an exclusive American club which partly explains her ability to sing English songs so well. It was her move to Singapore that saw her singing career taking off. Her English songs, mostly pop songs of the 70s and 80s, like Abba songs, earned her many Chinese fans in the region who do not speak or understand Mandarin.

Among her Mandarin songs, Autumn Wind(秋 风) is probably Tracy Huang’s most famous song, sung in 1978. This beautiful love song starts with the clear and melodious sound of a flute which sounds quite like the whistling sound of autumn winds and the first line of the lyrics aptly describes the blowing of the autumn wind. The song lyrics express sadness over an unfulfilled love. Tracy sang this song very well; her voice just perfect in this song, very clear, sad and haunting. The music is also beautiful. A truly beautiful love song, even though a sad song.

While Tracy Huang may be popularly known for singing the original Mandarin version of this song, I understand that this song is originally a Khmer film song “Goodbye Phnom-Penh” (lear heuy reachthearny/ goodbye capital), sung by Chhun Vanna in 1963.
A video of the Khmer song is at end of this post. For those old times, her voice is very nice.

Chhun Vanna was
once popular Cambodian singer who was imprisoned and tortured during the Khmer Rouge rule due to her known status as a singer, an obvious target of the communist purge that led to the terrible era of the “Killing Fields” in which the Khmer communist regime killed more than a million of their own people. During that time, she lost her husband and five of her children. Fortunately, she was able to survive and later fled to Thailand (refugee camp) before finally settling down in the US.

Lyrics, Pinyin lyrics and English translation:

秋风 (黄露仪)

Autumn Wind
Lyrics: Xu Qiang (许强)

qiu feng chui qi luo ye piao
The autumn winds blow up the fallen leaves which drift along

Pang huang de woa
I’m feeling anxious and uncertain

Pai huay cai ze zhe chie ko sang
I wonder along the the street

shi dui shi cuo   wo bu zhi dao
I do not know if it is right or wrong

I wonder if my destiny is teasing me
wo de ming yun   ta shi fou zai zuo nong wo

The blue ocean is not calm

wo de xin qing   ye xiang hai lang yi yang dong luan
Like the ocean waves, my heart is in turbulence

shi ai shi hen   wo bu zhi dao
I do not know whether it is love or hate

I just cannot forget the sad affairs of the past

Lai, Lai….
Come, come....

hui lai ba   tian mi de ai
Come back, my sweet love

xi yang xi xia
Like the setting sun in the west

duan chang ren   ni wei he zai tian ya
Why do heartbreaks exist in this world

The blue ocean is not calm

wo de xin qing   ye xiang hai lang yi yang dong luan
Like the ocean waves, my heart is in turbulence

shi ai shi hen   wo bu zhi dao
I do not know whether it is love or hate

I just cannot forget the sad affairs of the past

“Things” song lyrics (Dean Martin)

“Things” is a song written and recorded by Booby Darin in 1962. The song was also sung by Dean Martin and Nancy Sinatra in a 1967 TV special.

Lyrics:

Things

Every night I sit here by my window (window)

Staring at the lonely avenue (avenue)

Watching lovers holdin' hands

And laughin' (ha ha ha)

Thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do

(Thinkin' 'bout things)

Like a walk in the park (things)

Like a kiss in the dark (things)

Like a sailboat ride (ya ya)

What about the night we cried

Things like a lover's vow

Things that we don't do now

Thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do

Memories are all I have to cling to (cling to)

And heartaches are the friends

I'm talkin' to (but you got me now)

When I'm not thinkin' of just how much

I love you ('bout I love you, too)

I'm thinkin' the things we used to do

(Used to do, thinkin' 'bout things)

Like a walk in the park (things)

Like a kiss in the dark (things)

Like a sailboat ride (ya ya)

What about the night we cried

Things like a lover's vow

Things that we don't do now

Thinkin' about the things we used to do

I still can hear the juke box softly

Playin' (playin')

And the face I see each day belongs to you

(Belongs to you)

But there's not a single sound

And there's nobody else around

But that's just me thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do

(We used to do, thinkin' 'bout things)

Like a walk in the park (things)

Like a kiss in the dark (things)

Like a sailboat ride (ya ya)

What about the night that we cried

Things like a lover's vow

Things that we don't do now

Thinkin' about the things we used to do

And heartaches are the friends I'm talkin' to

You got me thinkin' 'bout

The things we used to do (I hope so)

Thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do

Hokkien Lyrics and English Translation

(Moonlit Night Sorrow)
Taiwanese Hokkien Song

(Moonlit Night Sorrow) is a 1933 Taiwanese Hokkien song composed by Teng Yu-hsien (邓雨贤), a Taiwanese Hakka musician who composed many well-known early Hokkien folk/ love songs despite restrictions during the 50-year Japanese military colonial rule (1895 – 1945) which was bent on imposing Japanese culture and language on the local Taiwanese people, and later, even after World War Two, from the Nationalist Kuomintang government (from mainland China) which was promoting Mandarin as the official language. 月夜愁 was was one of the Taiwanese songs rewritten as a Japanese military propaganda song (The Soldier's Wife) during the Japanese colonial rule of Taiwan which led to the Taiwanese men being conscripted to fight for the Japanese imperial army and women being forced into service as comfort women.

The “three-lane (or three lines road in Hokkien)” in the first line of the 月夜愁 lyrics refers to the urban roads built in Taipei during the Japanese occupation period. The lanes, lined with rows of trees, and with beautiful sceneries, was a favourite place for lovers to walk in the evenings. In the first paragraph of the lyrics, along the three-lanes road, the woman waited for the lover who did not turn up, causing her to feel disappointed and despondent. Instead of a romantic night, the moonlit night thus became gloomy.

Some of Teng Yu-hsien’s well known composition include “Bong Chun Hong (望春風/Longing for the Spring Breeze)” and “Wu Ya Huay (雨夜花/ Rainy Night Flower)”, famously sung by Teresa Teng. Sadly, Teng Yu-hsien died at a relatively young age of 38 (1906 – 1944).

Hokkien lyrics by sampan

English Translation:
Moonlit Night Sorrow

The moonlight shines on the three lane road
There is a light breeze blowing
The person I am waiting for
Why has he not come?
I am having doubts about him
I don't know what is wrong with him
Ah....gloomy dark moon

The longer I am without a lover, the more lovesick I am
The autumn cicadas are mourning
In the shadows of the trees under the moonlight
My heart is heavy and I am shedding tears
Ah....lonely dark moon

Are we not fated for each other?
I have so much love for him
That’s why I cannot forget him
In my dream we meet each other,
And I sing endless love poems to him
Ah....distressing dark moon
